International Archives Day

in nn. 2-3/2006

Dear Mr Edmondson

UNESCO WORLD DAY FOR AUDIOVISUAL HERITAGE
In addition to completing the questionnaire on the above subject, I wish to emphasise the importance of establishing an International Archives Day, which would be quite separate from the proposed World Day for Audiovisual Heritage on 27 October.
Archives cover an enormous spectrum of activity, from the creation of huge quantities of current records by public administrations and private enterprises, an increasing proportion of which are now in electronic form, to the preservation of historical archives in many formats that are made available to researchers, both professional and amateur. The effective management of records and archives is one of foundations for administrative transparency, democratic accountability, and the protection of human rights. They are also one of the main sources of mankind’s collective memory. It is essential that the important role that archives play in modern society should be drawn to the attention both of the general public and of decision makers on a regular basis. These issues are to my mind different in character and wider in scope than those concerning the audiovisual heritage addressed in the questionnaire.
I strongly believe that the key messages about archives would best be communicated by the establishment of a separate International Archives Day, similar to the World Book Day that already exists. I should be grateful if you could make this one of the recommendations of your report.
Yours sincerely
